Greece is a mountainous country, but Central Greece, in particular, is abounding in mountains. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most mountainous areas in the country. Central Greece lays in the centre of Greece and consists of the prefectures of Aitoloakarnania, Euritania, Phocis, Fthiotida, Boeotia, Euboea and Attica. The region’s climate is considered as very diverse and highly alternating, throughout the whole year. The landscape of Central Greece varies as well and it is very distinguished. Numerous bays and beaches, rushing rivers, especially in the winter months, streams and creeks, lush valleys and hills, mountains with snowy peaks, endless forests with exquisite flora and fauna, picturesque villages scattered on every corner of the area, all create a harmonious colourful blend, which is undoubtedly worth a visit.

Central Greece acquired its official name – Sterea Ellada – after the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire, when together with the Peloponnese, they were the only two clear territories forming the independent Greek State. Central Greece also bears the name Roumeli, which derives from the compound Turkish word Rum+ily, which means ‘the land of the Romans’. The residents of Central Greece are utterly proud of being called Roumeliotes, and there are certainly many reasons why they should feel this way.

Going back in time, it can certainly not go unnoticed that Sterea Ellada boasts an excessively rich history and a glorious past filled with inexhaustible historical events. References of Central Greece date back in the ancient times. The legendary city of Thebes is one of the many significant benchmarks of the area. The tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides bring to life stories of kings who lived there and exploits of heroes of Central Greece with the most sophisticated way. In Central Greece there is also Eliconas, the sanctuary of the 9 Muses of the Greek Mythology. Of course, it is inconceivable that one may miss noticing Delphi, ancient Greece’s most sacred city. Glorious battles if Plataea, Cheroneia, Thermopylae, strengthen further the historic significance of Central Greece. Great names from Greek Mythology, from ancient Greek art and literature as well as politics, are children of Sterea Ellada, such aas Isiodos, Epaminondas, Pelopidas, Plutarch. Central Greece also had the appropriate geographical conditions for the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire to be a success. The rugged mountainous areas of Roumeli were inaccessible to the invaders, but ideal hideouts for the rebellious Greeks.

Delphi is by far the most popular attraction of  Central Greece, receiving countless number of tourists annually. However, the whole region of Central Greece provides equally enjoyable pleasures. The natural beauty of the region’s diverse landscape, equipped with the most modern tourist resorts, is quite attractive and very impressive, no matter which time of the year one decides to visit.
